Environmental Management within Defence Acquisition is a mandatory requirement as detailed in the Secretary of State (SoS) for Defence's Policy Statement. This course aims to meet that requirement.
This course will be delivered either online or face-to-face depending on which dates you choose. The course aims and content remain comparable between the two courses, though there are some key differences you may like to take into account when deciding which version to attend.
The online course includes the same content, but has less emphasis on discussion and group work and therefore places more emphasis on independent study. This means there are fewer networking and opportunities for discussion during the online course, although sessions are set aside specifically for this purpose.
When attending the course online facilitators can only control the internet speeds and digital provision for outgoing video and content. It is recommended that you have a consistent internet connection and are comfortable with using an internet enabled device when taking the online course.

What you will learn
The nature of the equipment and services that the MoD procures is such that they are likely to have some environmental consequences through life. During acquisition it is essential to identify significant environmental aspects and impacts so defence can meet compliance obligations, enhance environmental performance, mitigate risks, and strengthen resilience to environmental challenges throughout the lifecycle of its activities and operations.
The ultimate objective of acquisition environmental management activities within defence is to deliver Products, Systems, and Services (PSS) with sound environmental performance. This objective underpins all the Acquisition Environmental Management Procedures (AEMPs) to ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into every stage of the PSS lifecycle.
The purpose of the AEMPs is to provide a structured framework to enable the delivery of PSS with sound environmental performance. Each AEMP focuses on a specific element of environmental management, collectively addressing compliance obligations, the potential for unintentional environmental harm, associated opportunities and risks, as well as measures to enhance adaptation and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
This course has evolved from the Project Oriented Environmental Management Systems (POEMS) in like with the MoD adopting the AEMP framework.
